Meeting with representatives of mining industry

Mining Shared Value, an Engineers Without Borders Canada venture and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) with the support of EITI Albania Secretariat, on May 3, 2016 in “Rogner Hotel Tirana” held an informal meeting, to present a project on the “establishment of a standardized system of reporting on public procurement at the local level in mining areas.” Meeting was attended by representatives of central state institutions, as the Ministry of Energy and Industry, National Agency of Natural Resources, Albanian Geological Survey, local government of areas where mining industry operates, representatives from mining companies, civil society, Faculty of Geology and Mining, etc.

The project aims to reflect the opportunities and challenges that mining companies have in connection with the acquisition and reporting on goods and services purchased from local companies.

Through meetings with mining companies and by recognizing the ways they deal with this issue, will be developed a standard which can provide guidance on how procurement government could meet the needs of mining and at the same time expectations local communities.

Through public procurement at the local level, companies can contribute to the economic development of communities and to support long-term mining interests.

Companies that share their perspective on this project will assist in developing a practical document for all companies reporting and implementation.
